Time for brave Zionism

David Landau is correct in describing the evacuation of a few token settler outposts as brave Zionism. Settlement is the epitome of stupid Zionism - place 500 Jews in the middle of Hebron and surround them with hundreds of soldiers. Impose regular curfews on the Palestinian population and what do you expect? Rose petals? That the Palestinians will just walk away?

The tough part comes now. Whatever way you look at it, Israel has spent the period since Menachem Begin was first elected prime minister driving down the wrong road. Some Israeli leader sooner or later is going to have to tell the people the honest truth. You have been married to the settlers for the last generation and the marriage is about to break up. You made the wrong decision (you were young and impressionable?) and it's time for a new start. Someone is going to have to give the order to evacuate Kiryat Arba. Ma'aleh Adumim will probably have to go. Who is going to tell the people of Ariel that they have been systematically lied to ever since they moved to the town?

There is more to bravery than strutting the streets with a kippa and an automatic rifle. A brave Zionist is one who sees that the future of the Jews in the Middle East lies in coexistence - that your future will be stronger when you let go of your settler fortresses in the heart of the future Palestinian state. Being brave means standing up to the brickbats and the many enemies - within Israel - of a durable settlement. Courage is needed to admit that you have wasted the last quarter century.

Brave Zionism will flourish. Stupid Zionism has had its day - look where it has led you.
